Toronto Raptors

This year, Toronto chose Scottie Barnes over Jalen Suggs with the No. 4 pick in the NBA Draft. Since Kyle Lowry was bound to leave the Raptors, Suggs seemed like an obvious fit. The mystery surrounding the selection has little to do with Barnes’ talent and everything to do with team necessities.

The Raptors already have O.G. Anunoby and Pascal Siakam, who play in the same manner as Barnes. It didn’t make sense unless the Raptors only wanted to play Fred VanVleet and a bunch of rangy wings. Regardless, Toronto will have a competitive starting lineup with Pascal Siakam, O.G. Anunoby, Fred VanVleet, Gary Trent Jr., and Khem Birch, who was recently re-signed to a three-year contract.

Toronto Raptors Starting Lineup Analysis

Kyle Lowry and Fred VanVleet are the starting guards, which wasn’t always the case as VanVleet backed up Lowry. OG Anunoby has stepped into a starting role now with Kawhi Leonard gone. Pascal Siakam and Serge Ibaka are the frontcourt starters.

The leading scorer on the Toronto Raptors is Pascal Siakam, as he is averaging 23.6 points per game this season. Siakam is an efficient stretch-four and has shot 45.9% from the field and 36% from three-point land.

Marc Gasol has been the worst starter on the Raptors when healthy this season. He ranks 13th on the team in player efficiency rating, which is dead last among starters. At Gasol’s age, he has struggled to find his old form, which might be never be seen again.

Fred VanVleet has averaged the most minutes of any starter this season, playing 35.8 per game, which just beats out Pascal Siakam. VanVleet has moved into the starting role this season and is averaging the highest minutes per game so far in his career.

The rotation has been somewhat similar no matter who was starting at center. Both Marc Gasol and Serge Ibaka have drawn starts at center this season, and both are averaging 27.5 minutes per game which is the fewest of any of the Raptors starters.
