On Tuesday, Tyler Herro of the Miami Heat awards NBA Sixth Man of the Year.
The 22-year-old beat out Kevin Love of the Cleveland Cavaliers. And Cam Johnson of the Phoenix Suns as contenders for the honor.
Herro enjoyed a career year in Miami, averaging 20.7 points, 5.0 rebounds, and 4.0 helps per amusement in his third season. He was the team’s second-leading scorer, following only Jimmy Butler, on a team that won the Eastern Conference’s No. 1 seed (21.4 PPG).
In 63 of 66 games, the Kentucky product scored double figures, with eight games exceeding 30 points.
He put up impressive numbers despite coming off the bench for all but ten games throughout the regular season. Butler and Kyle Lowry were maintained ahead of Miami Herro in the starting lineup. With Duncan Robinson earning the bulk of the starts during the season.
Herro contributed to the squad despite shooting 39.9% from three-point range and 86.8% from the free-throw line.
During the year 2020 playoffs, the year 2019 first-round selection made his national debut, helping the Heat reach the NBA Finals. He endured an up-and-down year 2020-21 season year due to neck and foot ailments, but he has finally established himself as a true star.
It was enough to earn the Sixth Man of the Year title in 2022, becoming the first Miami player to do so. It also ends a string of six Western Conference players receiving the award on that year, including four Clippers players. Jordan Clarkson of the Utah Jazz won it last year.
According to the NBA, Tyler Herro of the Miami HEAT is NBA Kia Sixth Man of the Year for 2021-22. He is the first player naming Sixth Man of the Year in team history. Herro scored 488 points from a worldwide panel of 100 sportswriters and broadcasters (96 first-place votes).
