Whether or not the Miami Heat’s golden boy Jimmy Butler’s new “emo” look is just a passing phase, the NBA star wore it well and made his friends laugh a lot.
One year after his famous fake dreadlocks look, the 34-year-old outdid himself by showing up at the Heat’s media day on Monday with a straightened fringe, piercings in his eyebrow and lips, and black nail polish.
Butler said he’s “emo” now, and after what he and the Heat have been through this summer, who can blame him?
Damian Lillard, a former guard for the Portland Trail Blazers, and his agent often said publicly that he would only want to play for Miami. It was a matter of when, not if, the 33-year-old would end up in South Beach.
Butler led the Heat to the NBA Finals as the eighth seed last season, which was a long shot. It’s easy to see why he’d be excited about Lillard joining the team and helping them win their first championship since LeBron James left.
But last week, the Milwaukee Bucks came in with a deal that blew Miami’s out of the water. Lillard will now be playing for the Milwaukee Bucks instead of the Miami Heat.
“Yeah, yeah, yeah, laugh it up,” Butler said as he entered his press conference, pushing his fringe out of his eyes. “I’m emo. This is my emotional state, I’m at one with my emotions so this is what you get.”
Even though he didn’t get Lillard and lost important players like Gabe Vincent and Max Strus, Butler is still positive about the upcoming season. He told reporters that the Heat will win it all.
If it’s good news that he’s finally in touch with his feelings, Butler might be a good method actress and not going through a late “emo” phase. As he walked into the news conference, the six-time All-Star was heard to say, “Don’t make me break character.”
His new character was a hit with his teammates, and Bam Adebayo was laughing so hard that he was crying while they were getting their pictures taken for the new season. This means Butler will have this hair in official photos for the year.
Butler is different from the kind of person who does things halfway. He threw himself into his new state and even shared emo band songs on his Instagram story throughout the day.
